Since 1985 Nerman-Lockhart has been making environmentally friendly firestarters. They are sold under the labels: Holy Smokes, Hot Flashes, Wise Guys, Bear Bun Warmers, Moose Flambé and Fishy-Wishy. Although we market them with humor, they really work!
We recycle used and scrap candles to make our starters. For Holy Smokes we gather candles from an ecumenical group of religious institutions including even a few temples (Jewish and Buddhist). The wood is recycled sawdust that is pressed into sheets in Maine.
Nerman-Lockhart, inc. buys candles from religious groups to recycle into Holy Smokes! and the Bishop's Barbecue Firestarters. We pay 25 cents/pound for the wax which includes everything from wonderful beeswax candles to multi-colored candle stubs that members have been saving at home. They reach from Maine to South Carolina and from Williamsburg, VA to Alameda, CA. Used candles are too heavy to economically ship by UPS so we arrange to pick-up the candles once a year when we are in the area exhibiting at a wholesale gift show.
Eliminate the use of paper, kindling and lighter fluid by placing half a firestarter stick between two logs and lighting it. They even start damp firewood. Each package contains nine long sticks which when broken in half along the perforation will light 18 fires.
